
Google and Qualcomm are actively working to extend software and security update support for Android devices. Currently, only Google and Samsung offer seven years of updates, but now Honor has joined their ranks.
Honor recently announced that its upcoming foldable and flagship smartphones will receive up to seven years of software and security updates. Software updates refer to Android version upgrades that integrate new features developed by Google, while security updates consist of monthly patches released by Google through AOSP to address vulnerabilities.
The first device to benefit from this extended support is the Honor Magic 7 Pro, which has been confirmed to receive seven years of updates. This initiative will initially be rolled out for the European variant of the device, with Honor prioritizing the European market for its extended update policy.
It remains unclear whether other Honor models will receive the same level of long-term support or when the seven-year update commitment will be extended to other regions. However, the fact that Honor has taken this step is a promising development.
One of the key distinctions between Android and iOS lies in software updates. Most Android devices become ineligible for updates after approximately three years, whereas Apple continues to provide security updates even for legacy models such as the iPhone X.
For Android users, maintaining device security requires timely security patches to mitigate vulnerabilities. Additionally, prompt software updates from OEMs allow users to experience the latest innovations introduced by Google.
From both a security and user experience perspective, offering prolonged software support presents numerous advantages. Moreover, this aligns with EU regulations aimed at extending the lifespan of electronic products and minimizing e-waste.
