Anthropic has recently published a supplementary memorandum elucidating the identity verification protocols that may be invoked within the Claude ecosystem. To ensure the conscientious deployment of its formidable technologies, the corporation asserts that it must first ascertain the identities of its users. These authentication mechanisms are designed to forestall deleterious misuse and ensure steadfast adherence to global regulatory mandates.
At present, specific engagement scenarios with Claude may trigger an identity audit. Should a user encounter such a requirement, they must submit valid credentials to sustain unfettered access to the platform’s features; failure to furnish adequate verification will result in the curtailment of certain functionalities.
The verification process is facilitated by Persona Identities. Anthropic maintains that all submitted documentation is utilized exclusively for authentication purposes. While Anthropic retains sovereign control over data retention policies and operational mechanisms, the data itself is sequestered within Persona Identities’ secure infrastructure.
Upon the initiation of a verification request, users are mandated to capture a live image of a physical identification document via a mobile or web camera. The submission of pre-existing photographs, photocopies, or digital reproductions is strictly prohibited to ensure the integrity of the process.
Acceptable forms of identification include, but are not limited to, national identity cards, passports, and driver’s licenses; essentially, most government-issued statutory documents are deemed valid. Conversely, the system categorically rejects photocopies, screenshots, digital scans, electronic IDs, and non-governmental credentials such as student or corporate identification, as well as financial instruments like bank cards.
As the data controller, Anthropic delineates the governance rules and retention intervals for this information, while Persona serves as the processor, managing the data on its servers according to Anthropic’s directives. While Anthropic may access these verification records through the Persona platform when necessary, it does not directly ingest or store the document images within its own primary repositories.
Anthropic explicitly underscores that identity data is never utilized for the refinement of its AI models. Furthermore, the corporation pledges to collect only the minimum requisite information, prohibiting its dissemination to third parties or its use for marketing, advertising, or any pursuit extraneous to the verification itself.
It is noted that Anthropic reserves the right to suspend user accounts for various infractions, such as persistent violations of usage policies, circumventing geographical restrictions, breaching terms of service, or the unauthorized registration of minors. In such instances, the submission of identification may not preclude a permanent ban. However, Anthropic does offer a formal recourse for account reinstatement; should a user believe their access was revoked in error, they are invited to submit a formal appeal through the designated channel.
