Apple has announced a major leadership reshuffle, confirming that Senior Vice President of Machine Learning and AI Strategy John Giannandrea will step down in the spring of next year — marking the end of his seven-year tenure at the company. Giannandrea, a former head of AI at Google who joined Apple in 2018 and reported directly to CEO Tim Cook, had long been regarded as one of the company’s most influential figures in its AI ambitions.
At the same time, Apple revealed the appointment of Amar Subramanya — a veteran of both Microsoft and Google — as Vice President of AI. He will report to Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi and spearhead development of foundational models, AI safety, and other strategically vital technologies.
Despite Giannandrea’s distinguished career in artificial intelligence, his leadership of Apple’s AI initiatives has been widely criticized both internally and externally for “lagging at least two years behind industry competitors.” Apple Intelligence arrived painfully late, the revamped Siri has faced repeated delays, and Apple itself has publicly acknowledged that progress has fallen short of expectations.
According to reporting from Bloomberg, Tim Cook has lost confidence in Giannandrea’s ability to lead Apple’s AI efforts. Ahead of his formal departure next spring — during which he will transition into an advisory role — Apple plans to disband the AI organization he once oversaw. Its teams will now report separately to Craig Federighi, COO Sabih Khan, and Services chief Eddy Cue, signaling Apple’s intention to weave AI more deeply and directly into each product line.
The incoming AI chief, Amar Subramanya, previously spent 16 years at Google, where he led engineering for the Gemini assistant. After briefly joining Microsoft as Vice President of AI this past July, he has now been recruited by Apple to take charge of its AI strategy. He will focus on model development, machine-learning research, and AI safety — the precise areas where Apple most urgently needs to catch up.
Beyond these executive-level shifts, Apple’s engineering ranks are also facing a growing talent drain, particularly in robotics.
Apple robotics research scientist and technical lead Yilun Chen recently announced on LinkedIn that he is leaving the company to join Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robotics team. This follows the departure of Apple’s principal robotics AI researcher Jian Zhang, who left for Meta in early September. Meanwhile, several members of the core model team responsible for the underlying technologies that power Apple Intelligence have also resigned.
Taken together, these departures underscore an intensifying internal talent crisis, as Apple struggles with setbacks in its in-house AI technology efforts — and now faces the challenge of rebuilding both leadership and engineering depth at a moment of unprecedented industry competition.
