Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman reports that Apple is preparing to begin mass production of its new MacBook lineup powered by the M5 processor, which will include refreshed MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models. These devices could be unveiled as early as the end of this year or in the first quarter of next year. At the same time, Apple is also said to be planning the release of two new displays, including an upgraded version of the Studio Display.
Earlier rumors had already suggested that Apple intended to launch a new MacBook Pro in the second half of this year. The latest report, however, indicates that Apple will continue its established pattern of prioritizing updates to the high-end MacBook Pro first. Gurman notes, though, that due to processor production capacity and supply chain factors, the debut of the new MacBook Pro could be pushed back to early next year.
Unlike the M4 processor, which first appeared in the 2024 iPad Pro released in the spring, the upcoming M5 chip will debut once again in the MacBook Pro line. It is also expected to feature deeper integration with Apple’s “Apple Intelligence” services.
While exact specifications of the M5 remain unconfirmed, industry expectations—shaped in part by Qualcomm’s recent unveiling of its Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme and X2 Elite processors—suggest that Apple will adopt a more advanced fabrication process for the M5, with significant improvements in performance, energy efficiency, and on-device AI processing power.
Market speculation also points to Apple potentially releasing a new MacBook priced at just $599, while the long-rumored OLED MacBook Pro may not arrive until 2027, likely featuring a redesigned Dynamic Island interface and powered by the M6 processor.
In addition, Apple may refresh its external display lineup this year with a new Studio Display equipped with a mini-LED panel, offering higher brightness and improved color reproduction, positioning it distinctly from the Pro Display XDR.
