Although OpenAI currently commands an enormous base of individual and enterprise users, its losses are likewise staggering. Earlier reports suggested that ChatGPT might seek additional revenue by incorporating built-in advertising, rather than relying solely on subscription fees and API income.
Developers have now discovered ad-related code within ChatGPT for Android—references to ad functionality, search ads, and marketplace content. Although these components are not yet active, they clearly indicate that OpenAI is already experimenting with advertising.
Among these, search-based advertising is likely the most suitable format for ChatGPT: embedding sponsored links directly within answers based on user queries. Given ChatGPT’s hundreds of millions of users, this model could become a substantial source of ad revenue.
OpenAI’s revenue continues to grow rapidly. As of June 2025, the company projected its annual recurring revenue to reach USD 10 billion. However, Sam Altman’s latest statements suggest that by the end of 2025, annual recurring revenue could rise to USD 20 billion.
By 2029, OpenAI is expected to accumulate losses of USD 115 billion before finally achieving positive cash flow—reaching its long-awaited break-even point.
