Anthropic quietly reshaped its Claude Team offering this week. The update lowers the entry barrier rather than the price. Until now, the plan demanded at least five seats. Going forward, it asks for only two members. As a result, far more small teams can adopt Claude Team and use its shared management tools.
What Changed in the Claude Team Plan
The headline shift is simple. The minimum seat count dropped from five to two. Meanwhile, pricing stayed exactly the same. Therefore, this change is purely about access. Smaller studios, agencies, and startups can now join without padding their headcount.
Requirements to Open a Claude Team Plan
Anthropic set a few clear conditions for new teams. Review them before you sign up.
- Member count: You need at least two members. The plan does not support solo individuals.
- Business email: Registration requires a company email. Anthropic does not accept public domains like Gmail.
- Upgrade path: Existing individual subscribers can move up to Claude Team.
- Separate accounts: Your Team and individual plans coexist. You can switch between them freely.
- Merge option: Alternatively, you can migrate a personal account straight into the team.
How Upgrading and Switching Work
Already subscribed as an individual? You can upgrade with ease. First, sign into your personal account. Then visit the upgrade page and follow the prompts. This creates a fresh organization. Meanwhile, your original account stays intact. Consequently, you can toggle between the two whenever you like. Data Migration: Read This Before You Merge
Merging accounts feels convenient, yet it carries real weight. Suppose you agree to migrate your personal account into the team. In that case, your chats, projects, files, and memory all move into the shared workspace. Naturally, that content may hold sensitive, private information. So proceed with real caution.
Existing Pro or Max Subscriptions
There is another wrinkle to weigh. Does your personal account hold Claude Pro or Claude Max? If so, migration cancels that subscription automatically. Claude Team then replaces it. However, Apple in-app purchases behave differently. You must cancel those yourself before you start.
Migration Runs Only One Way
This point deserves special emphasis. Once your content lands in the team workspace, it cannot return to a personal account. For that reason, keeping both accounts active is often the smarter choice. That way, if you ever leave the team, your existing chats stay safe.
Why This Matters for Small Teams
The lower threshold opens the door for lean operations. Two-person startups, freelancer duos, and small agencies now qualify. In short, Claude Team is no longer reserved for big departments. For many groups, shared projects and central admin finally make sense.
