Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced that the company has successfully recruited Alan Dye, a veteran design executive who spent nearly two decades at Apple, to lead a newly established Creative Studio within Meta Reality Labs.
Alan Dye previously served as Apple’s Vice President of Human Interface Design and was a pivotal figure behind the interfaces of the Apple Watch, iPhone X, and the Vision Pro headset.
Meta is now assembling a team defined by craftsmanship, creative vision, and systems thinking, with the goal of elevating its design capabilities and producing iconic products that seamlessly bridge hardware and software. This newly formed Creative Studio will be spearheaded by Alan Dye.
According to Mark Zuckerberg, the studio will fuse design, fashion, and technology, while treating intelligence as a new design material. He emphasized Meta’s belief that as AI becomes richer, more powerful, and more human-centric, it will unlock entirely new possibilities for product experiences. Dye’s tenure at Apple is distinguished — he has led Apple’s design studio since 2015 and is most recently known for the new “Liquid Glass” translucent visual aesthetic adopted across Apple devices. At Meta, he will report directly to CTO and Reality Labs chief Andrew Bosworth.
Alongside Dye, another former Apple design lead, Billy Sorrentino, will also be joining the team. Together, they will collaborate closely with Joshua To, head of interface design for Reality Labs; Pete Bristol, industrial design lead; and Jason Rubin, who oversees metaverse design. Securing former senior Apple designers is widely viewed as a critical step in Meta’s ambitions for AI-driven devices, including smart glasses. As Zuckerberg noted, “We are entering a new era in which AI glasses and other devices will transform the way we connect with technology — and with one another.”
Following Meta’s earlier hiring of former Apple model-team leader Ruoming Pang, this marks yet another high-profile defection from Apple, underscoring how fiercely the two tech giants are now competing to define the next generation of computing platforms.
