In a coordinated international operation, law enforcement authorities from Austria, Germany, and the Netherlands, with support from Europol, dismantled a criminal network suspected of carrying out a string of explosive ATM attacks in Austria.
According to Europol, “two individuals suspected of having blown up ATMs with solid explosives were taken into custody in Austria along with two individuals suspected of aiding them. In Germany, several alleged facilitators were identified.” The arrests took place on 19 August 2025, following simultaneous raids across the three countries .
The operation yielded significant seizures. Europol reported:
- Four arrests in Austria
- EUR 16,500 in cash
- Two explosive devices
- Two cars, ammunition, GPS trackers, mobile phones, and other evidence
Additionally, law enforcement seized “a high-powered getaway vehicle of German make as well as a scooter and two further vehicles used for logistics.”
Twelve properties, including garages and private homes in Germany and the Netherlands, were searched as part of the raids.
Investigators revealed that the main suspects were Dutch nationals from the Brabant region, with established ties to other criminal groups targeting Austria earlier in 2025. Europol’s statement noted: “Investigators could also determine that the latest ATM attack by the highly sophisticated group was carried out with the help of a German national, who allegedly brought in facilitators for renting cars and other logistical support.”
The evidence suggests the Dutch suspects orchestrated the attacks, while their German counterparts provided operational support.
The attacks were carried out using solid explosives made of flash powder from heavy pyrotechnics, which were detonated remotely. Europol emphasized the danger: “As cash machines are often located in residential areas, these attacks can cause serious harm to buildings and their residents.”
After blasting open ATMs—sometimes with a second charge—the suspects fled at high speed in powerful vehicles, creating additional risks to public safety.
