Revamped "Start" Menu Interface
In a recent Windows 11 Insider build, Microsoft released an update addressing a long-standing issue where the “Update and Shut Down” button failed to function as intended — a problem many users are likely familiar with. Under normal circumstances, this option should install updates in two stages: the first during shutdown, and the second upon reboot before loading the desktop.
In reality, however, the button had been malfunctioning for quite some time. Each time users clicked “Update and Shut Down,” the system would perform both the first and second installation stages immediately, then boot straight into the desktop. Many assumed they had clicked the wrong option, unaware that this behavior was in fact a Microsoft bug — one that persisted for over two years.
With the release of preview update KB5067036, Microsoft has finally rolled out a fix for the issue to Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. At this stage, the preview must be installed manually by checking for updates, but by November, the patch will be included in the “B-class” stable cumulative update for all users.
Notably, this update also includes several other fixes, such as resolving installation failures accompanied by error code 0x800f0983, restoring proper functionality of the Media Creation Tool on Arm64 devices, and addressing issues related to text rendering, networking, DRM protection, and authentication.
Users running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2 can install the update by navigating to Settings → Windows Update → Check for Updates, where KB5067036 should appear. Once downloaded and installed, a system restart will complete the process.
