Mozilla Firefox browser has recently released version 139.0, introducing several new features, including full-page translation on extension pages and experimental AI-powered hyperlink content previews.
However, following the update, some users with Nvidia GPUs began experiencing graphical artifacts while watching videos or browsing websites. In certain instances, the video or page would flicker or flash abruptly, significantly disrupting the user experience.
In response to user reports, the Firefox development team promptly launched an investigation and identified the root cause. Consequently, Mozilla has now released Firefox version 139.0.1 to address this issue. Users who update to this version should no longer encounter flickering problems.
The cause of the issue was traced to the accidental removal of a legacy blocklist in the previous release. This list had prevented Firefox from utilizing the DirectComposition feature in scenarios involving mixed refresh rates on Nvidia setups.
When users played 60FPS videos on 60Hz displays and scrolled or hovered over page content, certain video buffers could leak into adjacent windows, leading to flickering or flashing when the page attempted to redraw.
Notably, the issue does not occur with 30FPS videos, nor does it affect systems using AMD or Intel GPUs—it is specific to configurations involving Nvidia graphics cards.
It is important to emphasize that DirectComposition itself is not inherently problematic; rather, the issue stems from the way Firefox integrates the feature in conjunction with specific GPU configurations. Firefox engineers have committed to refining this integration to ensure future updates will no longer require the blocklist to avoid such issues.
Version 139.0.1 is now being rolled out. Users may access it by clicking the Firefox menu in the upper-right corner, selecting “About Firefox,” where the browser will automatically check for and install the latest update.
