Google DeepMind’s Chief Technology Officer, Koray Kavukcuoglu, has officially announced the full-scale launch of the Gemini 2.0 artificial intelligence model. In addition to the previously tested Gemini 2.0 Flash, this release introduces the experimental Gemini 2.0 Pro, as well as the cost-effective Gemini 2.0 Flash-Lite, designed for optimal efficiency.
Originally previewed in December last year, Gemini 2.0 was hailed as Google’s most powerful AI model to date. The company first rolled out the lighter-weight Gemini 2.0 Flash for early testing, followed by Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking, an AI model designed to exhibit cognitive processing capabilities while maintaining lightweight execution efficiency.
Now, with the addition of the experimental Gemini 2.0 Pro, the model is optimized for enhanced efficiency in programming and handling complex prompts. Simultaneously, Gemini 2.0 Flash-Lite offers a more cost-effective solution. Both models are available for preview through Google AI Studio and Vertex AI.
Meanwhile, the previously released Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking is now accessible via the Gemini App, supporting use on mobile devices, desktops, and laptops.
All these models support multimodal data input with text-based output, and Google anticipates expanding their multimodal interaction capabilities in the coming months, alongside feature updates and performance enhancements. The company has also emphasized its commitment to reinforcement learning-based evaluations, ensuring AI-generated outputs are more accurate and contextually relevant. Additionally, Gemini’s ability to process sensitive prompts will be further refined, with automated red-team testing implemented to assess operational risks and mitigate potential AI-induced threats.
