In April, Google introduced the A2A (Agent2Agent) protocol for AI agents, and it has since garnered support from hundreds of technology companies. Now, Google has announced that it will donate the A2A protocol to the Linux Foundation, making the foundation the sole steward of all associated assets and responsible for its ongoing development and governance.
With the Linux Foundation assuming control, the A2A protocol will no longer fall under Google’s exclusive purview. This transition assures the broader tech industry that A2A can be adopted with confidence, free from concerns about monopolization or competitive conflicts. The endorsement of the Linux Foundation is expected to facilitate the protocol’s continued evolution and adoption.
The A2A protocol is designed to meet the operational needs of AI agents within dynamic, multi-agent environments, enabling seamless coordination across diverse applications. It allows autonomous AI agents to discover one another, securely exchange information, and collaborate across systems. Developers can now federate agents from various sources and platforms, enhancing modularity and reducing vendor lock-in—thereby accelerating innovation.
Although the Linux Foundation now owns the A2A initiative, it is highly likely that Google’s AI team will remain its primary contributor. Nonetheless, this move significantly lowers the barrier for other companies wishing to participate, as the Linux Foundation’s neutrality ensures an open and collaborative environment—distinct from the proprietary interests of Google.
“We are happy to be the new home of the Agent2Agent Protocol project,” said Jim Zemlin, Executive Director of the Linux Foundation. “By joining the Linux Foundation, A2A is ensuring the long-term neutrality, collaboration and governance that will unlock the next era of agent-to-agent powered productivity.”
