Following multiple reports of battery overheating and fire hazards, Google has issued a warning to Pixel 6a users regarding potential battery temperature risks. As a precautionary measure, the company will release a mandatory software update designed to limit both charging speed and battery capacity in order to enhance device safety.
Not all Pixel 6a units will be subject to these restrictions. However, if Google’s system detects that a device’s battery has reached 400 charge cycles, it will automatically impose limitations on charging speed and capacity to reduce the risk of overheating during charging or usage.
After identifying similar issues with the Pixel 4a earlier this year, Google has now acknowledged that the Pixel 6a also faces potential overheating hazards. The forthcoming software update will include a new feature titled βBattery Health Management,β which will monitor system and battery performance. Starting next month, Google intends to proactively reach out to affected users with relevant information and recommended solutions.
It is worth noting that this is not the first time Pixel devices have encountered such challenges. In the first half of the year, Google imposed charging restrictions on the Pixel 4a due to similar battery safety concerns, including the risk of fire or explosion.
Users who installed the updated firmware on Pixel 4a devices experienced a significant reduction in battery capacity, in some cases necessitating multiple charges throughout the day. To address this, Google provided compensation options such as complimentary battery replacements.
It is anticipated that Google will offer similar support to affected Pixel 6a users, including free battery replacements. If implemented, this solution would restore the Pixel 6aβs usability without requiring frequent recharges.
