First unveiled at CES 2025, HDMI version 2.2 has now been officially finalized by the HDMI Forum, the body responsible for defining the standard. The most significant enhancement is the doubling of transmission bandwidth—from 48Gbps to a remarkable 96Gbps.
While HDMI 2.2 does not necessitate a new connector, unleashing its full potential requires the use of newly developed Ultra96 cables. Only these certified cables can sustain data transmission rates of up to 96Gbps, surpassing the 80Gbps limit supported by DisplayPort 2.1.
The doubling of bandwidth enables HDMI 2.2 to deliver content at higher refresh rates and resolutions. For instance, it supports 4K resolution at 240Hz, 8K at 60Hz, and even 4:4:4 chroma subsampling with 12-bit color depth.
Notably, HDMI 2.2 also incorporates Display Stream Compression (DSC) to facilitate 12K at 120Hz and 16K at 60Hz content delivery. While such ultra-high resolutions may currently exceed the needs of general consumers, they could prove invaluable for niche industrial or professional applications.
Following the introduction of HDMI 2.1, the HDMI Forum observed inconsistencies in cable compliance. In response, it now mandates that manufacturers clearly label all new Ultra96 cables, each of which must undergo independent testing to verify adherence to the Ultra96 standard. Only then will they receive official certification from the HDMI Forum.
Another important innovation in HDMI 2.2 is the inclusion of the LIP (Latency Indication Protocol), designed to enhance audio-video synchronization. This feature is especially beneficial in complex setups involving AV receivers or soundbars, where it helps eliminate lip-sync issues.
The first wave of HDMI 2.2-compatible devices is expected to debut in Q4 2025. Leaked information suggests that AMD’s upcoming Radeon UDNA GPUs will support the new standard, albeit with a capped bandwidth of 80Gbps rather than the full 96Gbps.
