In early July, Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey launched the decentralized, Bluetooth-based social platform “Bitchat,” which promotes communication without relying on internet connectivity. More recently, he unveiled a new venture titled “Sun Day”—an application centered on tracking sunlight exposure and ultraviolet (UV) radiation data, signaling a strategic foray into the realm of personal wellness and lifestyle.
“Sun Day” is currently available for beta testing via Apple’s TestFlight platform. The app focuses on monitoring and analyzing daily sun exposure by factoring in the user’s location, clothing choices, and skin tone to estimate UV exposure and potential vitamin D synthesis.
The interface is elegantly simple. Users begin by providing their current location, then selecting their attire for the day from preset categories. They are also prompted to choose one of six skin tone profiles, enabling the app to deliver a more personalized estimate of safe sun exposure durations and UV-related risks.
Based on the provided inputs, the system displays the current UV index, the day’s peak UV level, sunrise and sunset times, and a “burn limit”—an estimate of the maximum safe time one can spend under direct sunlight. For users interested in tracking their vitamin D intake, the app includes a “Track UV exposure” feature that offers a daily projection of accumulated vitamin D levels.
The emergence of this app underscores Dorsey’s continued commitment to decentralization and personal autonomy. While “Bitchat” addresses offline peer-to-peer messaging, “Sun Day” caters to health-conscious individuals increasingly attentive to their sun exposure and outdoor activity routines.
At present, “Sun Day” remains in its testing phase, available exclusively to a limited group of iOS users via TestFlight. The app has yet to be released on the App Store, and no Android version has been announced. Nevertheless, the back-to-back release of both “Bitchat” and “Sun Day” highlights Dorsey’s ongoing efforts to reimagine social and personal applications, aiming to construct a digital lifestyle that exists independently of mainstream platforms.
Whether “Sun Day” will eventually integrate additional health sensors or wearable device data remains one of the key developments to watch.
