The fourth release candidate (rc4) of Linux Kernel 6.16 has officially been published. With a total of seven to eight release candidates expected, the final version of Linux Kernel 6.16 is anticipated to arrive in approximately one month.
This rc4 update primarily focuses on file system fixes and driver improvements, addressing issues in bcachefs, SMB, and Btrfs file systems or protocols, while driver updates aim to resolve performance-related problems.
Beyond file system and driver enhancements, rc4 includes a variety of additional changes—such as documentation updates, architecture fixes, self-tests, and a host of routine bug resolutions. Linus Torvalds has called upon the community to continue testing this kernel version to help ensure greater stability upon its official release.
Once the Linux Kernel 6.16 stable version is launched, users of Arch Linux and Fedora will be among the first to receive the update. Other distributions will follow, depending on vendor adaptation and rollout schedules. Naturally, advanced users also have the option to compile the kernel manually.
According to Phoronix, Kernel 6.16 is expected to introduce several hardware advancements, including support for Nvidia Blackwell and Hopper GPUs, as well as open-source drivers for Intel Wildcat Lake processors.
It is important to note that release candidate kernels remain experimental, and users are advised to install them only in testing environments. Deploying rc builds in production systems is discouraged, as they may contain unexpected issues.
