Shortly after the release of Windows 11 version 24H2, users began reporting irregularities with the Windows Hello facial recognition feature. Affected users noted that errors in facial detection could cause certain applications to freeze, rendering them unusable.
Microsoft’s investigation confirmed the issue: the malfunction could be triggered when using the Camera app, the Windows Hello biometric login option, or any other application that accessed the integrated camera on affected PCs.
To minimize the impact, Microsoft promptly blocked devices with the problematic cameras from upgrading to version 24H2, preventing users from encountering system lockouts or failures in app functionality caused by faulty facial recognition.
Now, after more than 11 months, Microsoft has finally resolved the bug. The company has removed the upgrade block from its servers, allowing previously restricted devices to install Windows 11 version 24H2 through regular system updates.
In its Windows Health Dashboard, Microsoft stated:
“Eligible devices with no other safeguard hold should now be able to install Windows 11, version 24H2 via the Windows Update release channel. Please note, it can take up to 48 hours before the update to Windows 11, version 24H2 is offered. Restarting your device might help it offer faster.”
Microsoft strongly recommends installing the latest security updates, as they include important improvements and fixes — including the resolution of the camera-related issue discussed here.
It is also worth noting that Microsoft plans to release Windows 11 version 25H2 in October. Since this build shares the same underlying infrastructure as 24H2, it will not introduce major new features. Users who have not yet upgraded to version 24H2 may wish to wait a little longer and proceed directly to 25H2 instead.
