Meta Platforms, the social media conglomerate, has significantly bolstered the industry with its open-source AI models from the Llama series. However, the company has yet to release its own AI chatbot application, leaving it unable to directly compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.
This situation may soon change. Reports indicate that Meta Platforms is preparing to launch its own AI chatbot in the second quarter of 2025, leveraging its Llama series of open models to cater to users’ growing demand for AI-driven services.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has underscored the transformative potential of Meta AI, projecting that its user base could reach one billion within the year. At present, the Meta AI assistant serves approximately 700 million monthly active users, having been integrated across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook Messenger.
With the anticipated release of a standalone application, users will be able to directly access this AI assistant to solve various problems and provide insights. Naturally, the primary objective of launching an independent version is to introduce a paid subscription model, positioning Meta to compete with OpenAI and Google.
Zuckerberg has not disclosed the official name, release date, or pricing tiers of the AI assistant’s subscription model. However, it is reasonable to assume that Meta will follow OpenAI’s strategy by offering both a free and a premium version, with the latter providing an enhanced AI experience and more advanced features.
Moreover, Meta has already earmarked between $60 billion and $65 billion this year to strengthen its AI infrastructure. This substantial capital expenditure will help Meta AI maintain its industry leadership, expand its infrastructure, and ensure a stable and scalable service for users.
