A Windows Server update released in July caused cluster disruption errors, yet Microsoft did not publicly disclose the issue at the time, instead instructing affected customers to contact Microsoft Technical Support for mitigation guidance.
In its latest August Patch Tuesday release, Microsoft has finally acknowledged the error and confirmed that it has been resolved. All impacted customers can now address the problem by installing update KB5063887, eliminating the need for separate mitigation deployments.
The disruption primarily affected customers using Microsoft BitLocker with Cluster Shared Volumes (CSV). On Windows Server 2019 systems leveraging CSV, the cluster service could intermittently start and stop, preventing all nodes from rejoining the cluster.
This issue also triggered node isolation and caused affected virtual machines to reboot repeatedly, with Event Viewer continuously logging ID 7031 errors. All Windows Server 2019 customers using CSV were susceptible to the problem.
Microsoft has not released a dedicated support document detailing the root cause or the technical specifics of the fix. The only reference to the resolution appears within the KB5063887 update notes, leaving the precise cause of the fault unclear for now.
Additionally, this update addresses certain issues in the Microsoft Cangjie Input Method for Windows Server 2019, which previously prevented users from properly selecting characters or words. Installing the update resolves these input-related problems.
