Microsoft has officially announced the complete discontinuation of its Movies & TV app store functionality, meaning users will no longer be able to purchase or rent new movies and television shows via Xbox or Windows devices. However, previously purchased content will remain accessible for playback.
According to Microsoft’s updated support page: “Microsoft no longer offers new entertainment content for purchase, including movies and TV shows, on Microsoft.com, Microsoft Store on Windows, and the Microsoft Store on Xbox. However, you can continue to access your purchased content in the Movies & TV app on Xbox or Windows device.” It is important to note that such content cannot be transferred to other platforms.
For users in the United States, Microsoft recommends using the third-party service Movies Anywhere, which enables the synchronization of purchased films with other supported platforms such as Apple TV and Prime Video—helping users avoid being locked into a single ecosystem. However, this service is currently available only in the U.S.
The Movies & TV app originated from the Zune Video Marketplace launched in 2006, rebranded in 2012 as Xbox Video, and eventually evolved into the current iteration. Once a competitor to Apple’s iTunes and Amazon’s Prime Video, the platform also served as a cornerstone in Microsoft’s strategy to position the Xbox One console as a central hub for home entertainment.
With the formal termination of the Movies & TV app, Microsoft signals its definitive departure from multimedia platform integration, aligning with its ongoing reorganization of the Xbox business.
Users can still install and use third-party streaming and digital purchase applications, such as Apple TV and Prime Video, through the Xbox or Windows Store. Microsoft has emphasized that no refunds will be issued for past purchases, although access and playback rights will be preserved.
