To ensure long-term stability, Microsoft has begun renting additional computing power from its primary rival, Amazon. Importantly, Microsoft is renting standard cloud computing infrastructure, not specialized AI processing power.
Is Microsoft Azure Lacking Server Capacity?
Before its acquisition, GitHub relied primarily on self-built infrastructure. Following the buyout, GitHub gradually migrated its services to the Microsoft Azure cloud platform. Logically, as a leading cloud provider, Microsoft should possess abundant computing capacity. Why, then, must they rent capacity from Amazon? The only conclusion is that Microsoft’s server capacity is now severely constrained.
Developers feel this strain acutely. GitHub currently experiences increasingly frequent outages and extended downtime periods. Consequently, several prominent open-source projects have migrated to alternative platforms. This shift does not imply GitHub is an inferior tool. Rather, the unacceptable frequency of system failures forces developers to seek more stable environments.
AI Agent Programming Drives Capacity Alerts
As emphasized earlier, GitHub faces a fundamental shortage of general server capacity. This is not primarily a deficit in specialized AI processing power, although cost factors exist. The root cause of this shortage stems from the explosive growth of AI agent programming. This modern workflow causes GitHub commit volumes to surge dramatically. In 2025, developers made approximately one billion commits. In 2026, projections indicate this number will reach a staggering fourteen billion.
Furthermore, GitHub’s Chief Technology Officer addressed this in an April availability update. Initially, the company planned a tenfold capacity increase. However, urgent circumstances forced a rapid adjustment. By February 2026, GitHub expanded its target to a thirtyfold capacity boost. This sheer velocity of expansion likely alarms Microsoft, considering Azure’s inherent physical limits.
Microsoft Explores a Multi-Cloud Strategy
Concurrently, reporters contacted Microsoft to verify these developments. Microsoft responded quite candidly. They stated that the staggering growth in agent development has pushed infrastructure beyond its limits. Thus, GitHub is accelerating its Azure migration. Simultaneously, they are exploring a multi-cloud strategy for GitHub to achieve better elasticity and scale. Ultimately, this aims to significantly enhance platform stability.
Undoubtedly, renting capacity from a fierce competitor presents an awkward situation for Microsoft. However, this embarrassment remains a secondary concern compared to alienating developers with frequent outages. In today’s technological landscape, collaborating with rivals is no longer unprecedented. For instance, Google previously established an AI computing lease agreement with SpaceX. This occurred because Google Cloud Platform could not meet internal and client demands.
