Recently, a California resident filed a lawsuit in a local court against Microsoft over its plan to end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025βa move that could cause widespread disruption given the operating systemβs still-dominant market share.
Although Microsoft offers an Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, the plaintiff is dissatisfied, insisting that support for Windows 10 should continue until its market share drops below 10%. Notably, the plaintiff is not seeking any monetary compensation.
The lawsuit argues that Microsoftβs decision will force millions of users to abandon older hardware in favor of new devices or to pay for ESU coverage (though free activation methods also exist). It further notes that some businesses continue to use Windows 10 to store sensitive consumer data, and ending support could significantly increase their security risks.
The plaintiff, California resident Klein, expressed strong disapproval of Microsoftβs decision to discontinue Windows 10 support, accusing the company of pushing users toward purchasing AI PCs. In Kleinβs view, the move is driven by a desire to boost AI PC sales rather than any genuine technical necessity.
While Klein does not request financial compensation, he demands that Microsoft continue supporting Windows 10 until its market share falls below 10%. He also calls on Microsoft to clearly disclose in its advertising the approximate lifecycle of Windows on each deviceβor at minimum, to state the guaranteed support period without extra fees, along with the potential security and functionality consequences of support termination.
Although no monetary damages are sought, Klein requests that Microsoft cover his legal fees. Given the complex terms of use governing Microsoftβs software and hardwareβwhich users tacitly accept upon useβthe case is expected to face significant legal hurdles.
