In a newly published support article, Microsoft has issued a warning to users of the classic version of Outlook, cautioning that the application may consume excessive CPU resources during text input—sometimes spiking CPU usage to 50%, resulting in significant sluggishness within Outlook or even across the entire system.
The root cause of this issue remains unclear; however, Microsoft has confirmed that users on the Current Channel, Monthly Enterprise Channel, and Insider Channel running version 2406 Build 17726.20126 are affected. Impacted users have reported abnormal CPU usage increases ranging from 20% to 50%, which, in turn, has led to reduced battery life on laptops and tablets.
Microsoft is currently investigating the underlying cause and will issue an update to resolve the problem once a fix is available. In the meantime, no permanent solution exists, and users are advised to implement a temporary workaround provided by Microsoft to restore Outlook’s functionality.
Microsoft has noted that this issue has not been observed on the Semi-Annual Channel. Therefore, users may mitigate the problem by switching to that channel. Transitioning channels requires modifying the Windows Registry and checking for updates. The specific steps for editing the registry are as follows:
- Open a Command prompt window (ensure Run as administrator was selected).
- Paste the command below and press Enter:Software\Policies\Microsoft\office\16.0\common\officeupdate /v updatebranch /t REG_SZ /d SemiAnnual reg add HKLM\
- After you add the registry key, select File > Office Account > Update Options > Update Now to initiate the switch to Semi Annual Channel.
