Microsoft Copilot is currently one of the company’s flagship AI initiatives, and as such, it has been silently pushed and installed on consumer versions of Windows 11 via system updates—an approach not uncommon in that product tier.
However, it comes as a surprising and disconcerting development that even Windows 11 LTSC 2024, the Long-Term Servicing Channel known for its emphasis on stability and minimal change, is now receiving unsolicited installations of the Copilot AI client. The lack of user consent in such a context raises serious concerns.
User @BobPony described the incident as “The WORST April Fools joke from Microsoft,” noting that on April 1, 2025, Copilot was automatically installed on his Windows 11 LTSC 2024 system without any prompt or notification—no option to confirm or deny, just silent execution.
Given past occurrences of similar behavior, we suspect that the issue may stem from a backend deployment error on Microsoft’s part. Typically, Windows 11 LTSC 2021/2024 and Windows Server 2022/2025 editions are excluded from such updates due to their mission-critical use cases and the high value placed on system integrity. But history has shown that missteps in Microsoft’s push systems can inadvertently override these safeguards.
The root cause of this incident remains unclear, but there’s a strong possibility that a misconfiguration in Microsoft’s deployment infrastructure is to blame.
Although affected users are currently able to uninstall Copilot, there is concern that it may be reinstalled during subsequent cumulative updates. If more instances of Copilot appearing on LTSC 2021/2024 systems are reported, it may signal that this was not an accident but rather a deliberate shift in Microsoft’s update policy—one that could have significant implications for long-term support users who prioritize stability and control over their computing environments.
