Notepad was once merely a tool for recording plain text, valued for its light weight and simplicity — qualities that kept its usage remarkably high. Even the once-abandoned Notepad has since been revived, receiving continuous updates and, eventually, the integration of AI capabilities.
In earlier versions, Notepad added support for the Markdown format commonly used by developers, allowing users to perform various operations using MD commands. However, this support was limited, with only a subset of Markdown syntax recognized.
In the latest release, Microsoft has introduced lightweight table support for Markdown within Notepad. Users may now insert tables directly through the menu, selecting the desired number of rows and columns. Once inserted, the table is automatically rendered in Markdown format, and users may switch to plain text mode to copy the table into other Markdown-compatible applications.
Since tables often require modification, inserted tables can be expanded or reduced via the right-click menu. The experience is somewhat reminiscent of inserting tables in Microsoft Word, and overall, the feature remains easy to use.
Microsoft is also enhancing the integration of Microsoft Copilot within Notepad. This update improves writing, rewriting, and summarization capabilities, with the new version adopting streaming responses — meaning content appears more quickly without waiting for a full reply. Users can preview results instantly and interact in real time.
It should be noted that all AI features require signing in with a Microsoft account, as they rely on cloud-based Microsoft Copilot services. Streaming support for the rewriting feature is exclusive to Copilot+ PCs, which utilize the device’s local NPU to perform rewrites and deliver streamed output.
