NVIDIA recently announced that its legacy graphics cards based on the Maxwell and Pascal architectures will receive their final feature updates in October 2025. After that point, these GPUs will continue to receive security updates for up to three years, but no longer benefit from new features or game-specific performance optimizations.
Once functional updates cease, NVIDIA will no longer provide compatibility support or tuning for new game releases, nor will any future innovations introduced by NVIDIA be extended to these older GPUs. The company will limit its support to issuing patches solely to address security vulnerabilities.
The GPUs affected include the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 7XX, 9XX, and 10XX series. According to Steam’s hardware survey, usage of the 7XX and 9XX series has dwindled significantly due to limited memory capacity, while the 10XX series still retains a respectable presence among gamers.
While users may continue using these graphics cards beyond October 2025, gamers in particular should consider upgrading, as the lack of ongoing optimizations could degrade gaming performance and experience.
Beginning in October 2025, these GPUs will enter a security support phase. NVIDIA plans to deliver quarterly security updates until October 2028, focusing solely on vulnerability remediation. These updates will not include any enhancements or game optimizations, and users can expect a notable decline in driver update frequency, especially compared to the current near-monthly cadence.
For non-gaming users, these changes will have minimal impact—particularly for those using the GPUs for general tasks like office work or web browsing. In such cases, the absence of new features is largely inconsequential. Even after the security support period ends, continued use of these cards remains feasible, though certain unresolved vulnerabilities may pose potential security risks.
