OpenAI recently unveiled a significant upgrade to its developer-oriented programming tool, Codex, introducing a suite of enhanced capabilities. With this update, developers can now enable Codex to connect to the internet, unlocking a range of functionalities such as installing dependencies, upgrading software packages, and executing tests that require access to external resources.
Notably, ChatGPT Plus subscribers are now granted complimentary access to Codex. During the promotional period, these users will enjoy a generous usage quota, although OpenAI may temporarily reduce access during peak demand periods.
Regarding Codex’s internet access capabilities, the feature is disabled by default but can be manually activated in specific environments. Users can also define the exact domains Codex is permitted to access, such as GitHub.com.
The network access feature is currently available to users of ChatGPT Plus, ChatGPT Pro, and ChatGPT Teams. OpenAI has confirmed that support for ChatGPT Enterprise subscribers is forthcoming, although no precise timeline has been disclosed.
Additional enhancements to OpenAI Codex include:
- Binary File Support: All file operations are now supported when applying patches. For pull requests, binary files can currently only be deleted or renamed.
- Improved Error Messaging in Installation Scripts: Developers are provided with more informative messages to aid in troubleshooting.
- Increased Task Diff Limit: The maximum size for task differences has been raised from 1MB to 5MB.
- Extended Installation Script Timeout: The execution time limit has been doubled from 5 minutes to 10 minutes, accommodating more complex installation tasks.
- Refined GitHub Integration Workflow: The connection process has been streamlined for better usability.
- Restoration of Live Activities on iOS: Real-time updates on iOS have been re-enabled following the resolution of missed notification issues.
- Updated Authentication Policy: The requirement for mandatory two-factor authentication for users logging in via SSO or social accounts has been removed.
