OpenAI Model Capacity Error Reveals Account Flagging

Recently, numerous Codex users encountered frequent model capacity errors during daily use. However, the selected model has not actually reached its true capacity limit. Instead, this error simply masks how OpenAI handles flagged accounts. Consequently, repeatedly seeing this warning means the system has already flagged your account.

Switching Models Offers No Solution

Switching models offers no meaningful solution. Changing models or reasoning levels provides absolutely no help when facing this issue. For instance, switching from GPT-6 Astra to GPT-5.6 Sol triggers the exact same error prompt. Furthermore, endless retries will merely produce continuous error messages. Once this situation occurs, normal usage becomes practically impossible.

The system displays the following message: ‘Selected model is at capacity. Please try a different model.’ Seeing this warning continuously confirms that the system has blacklisted your account.

OpenAI Explains the Restrictions

OpenAI explains the underlying reason for these restrictions. The OpenAI system temporarily restricts access to specific models based on account activity. Moreover, the company refuses to provide specific reasons for these automated risk controls. Meanwhile, the system automatically reassesses account access privileges on a regular schedule. Therefore, if the restricted activity ceases, the account will recover normally without further limitations.

Additionally, submitting a support ticket cannot resolve this frustrating problem. OpenAI customer service will absolutely not handle these specific issues. However, users might successfully request a refund using this exact reason. Obtaining a refund depends entirely on the appeal and customer service attitudes. Fortunately, appealing for a refund through Apple channels usually works effectively for iOS subscribers.

Official OpenAI Staff Response

An OpenAI staff member recently provided an official response addressing the selected model capacity issue on the community forum. They stated that access to certain models might face temporary limitations based on account activity. This restriction applies even when a paid subscription remains fully active.

Furthermore, they cannot provide additional details about these security checks. However, the system automatically reassesses access continuously. Normal access can return once the problematic activity stops. Finally, they advise users to review the Terms of Use and troubleshooting guidance.
