OpenAI has announced its intention to gradually phase out access to the recently unveiled GPT-4.5 model from its developer-targeted API, replacing it with the newly released and more efficient GPT-4.1.
Although GPT-4.5 was initially introduced with claims of offering more natural and emotionally resonant interactions, and even outperformed GPT-4o, o3-mini, and o1 in OpenAI’s SimpleQA benchmark with a correctness rate of 37.1%, the company now emphasizes the superior efficiency of GPT-4.1 for developer use.
The GPT-4.1 model is currently available exclusively to developers and is offered in three distinct variants: the standard GPT-4.1, the more compact GPT-4.1 mini, and the ultra-lightweight GPT-4.1 nano. This tiered approach enables developers to deploy the model in a more cost-effective manner based on their specific requirements.
Notably, GPT-4.1 boasts enhanced code-handling capabilities and a significantly extended context window—capable of processing up to one million tokens—while also incorporating general knowledge available on the internet up to June 2024.
From a median query cost perspective, GPT-4.1 offers approximately 26% savings compared to GPT-4o, making it an ideal choice for building a wide range of generative AI applications.
Developers can now access GPT-4.1 via OpenAI’s API resources, while access to GPT-4.5 will be discontinued after July 14 of this year. However, the GPT-4.5 model will remain available through the publicly accessible ChatGPT platform.
