In recent months, OpenAI has suspended a significant number of API accounts that were found to be misused or in violation of platform policies. These accounts, typically operated by developers accessing the GPT model series via API, could often be easily replaced by simply registering a new account with a different email address.
To further combat abuse, OpenAI now plans to introduce an identity verification mechanism. Under this system, users registering for an account must submit government-issued identification to complete the verification process before gaining access to certain AI models. Each ID may be used to verify only one organizational account within a 90-day period.

According to OpenAI’s official guidance, identity verification on the API platform is not mandatory. Developers may continue to use the API without verifying their identity; however, only verified accounts will be granted access to select upcoming AI models. In contrast, unverified users may be limited to older or less capable models.
Not all organizational accounts will be eligible for identity verification. However, those that qualify and complete the process will unlock access to OpenAI’s most advanced models and features. The exact criteria for eligibility have not yet been disclosed.
OpenAI stated: “We take our responsibility seriously to ensure that AI is both broadly accessible and used safely. Unfortunately, a small minority of developers intentionally use the OpenAI APIs in violation of our usage policies. We’re adding the verification process to mitigate unsafe use of AI while continuing to make advanced models available to the broader developer community.”
This identity verification feature has not yet been launched. However, OpenAI may begin rolling it out to select accounts ahead of the release of new models, granting them early access. With multiple new models on the horizon, this verification requirement is expected to go live soon.
