Earlier, Google announced a major update to the βDeep Researchβ feature built into its AI assistant, Gemini. Originally launched late last year, this feature primarily leveraged web sources to craft comprehensive reports on complex topics. With the latest update, however, it will now extend its reach to usersβ personal Google Workspace dataβincluding content from Gmail, Google Docs, Google Drive, and Google Chat.
According to Google, integrating personal Workspace data is βone of the most requested features by users.β Following this enhancement, Gemini will no longer rely solely on public web information but will also be able to access and synthesize data from emails, Slides, Docs, Sheets, PDF files stored in Drive, and chat histories, using them as reference material.
This means Gemini can now generate far more personalized reports. For instance, when a user asks the AI to prepare a marketing analysis, it can automatically draw upon notes stored in Google Drive, related discussions in Gmail, and even cross-reference internal insights with public data to produce a more in-depth competitive analysis spreadsheet.
In light of privacy concerns, Google emphasized that users will have full control over which data Gemini can access. When activating the βDeep Researchβ tool, users will see a dropdown menu allowing them to individually enable or restrict access to data from Search, Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Chat.
This newly enhanced βDeep Researchβ feature that integrates Workspace data will be available to all users free of chargeβno subscription required. The update has already rolled out on the desktop version of Gemini, with Google confirming that mobile support for iOS and Android will arrive βin the coming days.β
