Russia wants to build its own Internet and conduct independent regulation
As cybersecurity becomes more and more important, as a fighting nation, Russia can also become a self-contained system in network technology. In addition to regulation at the social software level, regulations have been issued that foreign companies must set up offices and data centers in Russia and data on Russian citizens should not go abroad. Today, fighting peoples speak louder again: building an independent Internet.
From a technical point of view, it is not impossible for Russia to build its own Internet. If you want to build Russia’s own DNS, you only need to have a namespace, a root server and reconfigure an existing domain name resolver.
But the difficulty is how to make Russian citizens only on their own Internet. Because Russia can not destroy other Internet, and Russia’s own Internet, more accurately, just the Russian local area network. How to get Russian citizens to replenish their own routers, domain names and reconfigure all networked devices will be a challenge.
ICANN would like to remove a top-level domain name from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which will result in the lack of trust in ICANN in almost every country. Obviously, ICANN will not do so.
From the perspective of Russia’s own situation, Russia’s move is on the one hand in its own cybersecurity consideration and on the other hand, it is also closely linked with the previous relations between the Crimea incident and Ukraine.
