Samsung data breach
If you currently own a Samsung-branded soundbar, it is advisable to temporarily disable automatic updates, as Samsung’s latest firmware has rendered numerous models unusable. The primary device affected is the Samsung HW-Q990D; however, users have also reported similar issues with models HW-800D and HW-S801D.
The HW-Q990D is configured by default to automatically install firmware updates. Recently, Samsung issued firmware version 1020.7, which immediately resulted in devices becoming inoperable (“bricked”) upon automatic installation. Even attempts by users to reset their devices have proven futile, leaving them unable to restore functionality.
There have been widespread complaints and discussions detailing this issue across Samsung’s official forums, as well as on X and Reddit. Despite numerous reports, Samsung has yet to provide an official acknowledgment or propose a remedy on its support channels.
Several users noted that after contacting Samsung customer service, they were instructed to bring their HW-Q990D devices to authorized service centers for repair. However, neither the nature of the defect nor the estimated repair duration has been clarified.
This problematic firmware update has impacted users across multiple regions, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Malaysia, indicating a potentially widespread global issue.
Therefore, if you own one of these Samsung soundbar models, it is prudent to connect via the SmartThings app and disable automatic updates for the time being, thus preventing your device from automatically installing the problematic firmware version 1020.7 and becoming unusable.
