According to a report by security/elon-musks-spacex-set-to-win-2-billion-pentagon-satellite-deal-c0a51325" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">The Wall Street Journal, Elon Musk’s SpaceX is expected to secure a $2 billion contract from the U.S. government to develop satellites for President Donald Trump’s proposed “Golden Dome” initiative.
The report details that, under this agreement, SpaceX will be tasked with developing up to 600 satellites designed to track missiles and aircraft, forming the foundation of a high-tech aerial defense network.
The “Golden Dome” project, announced by President Trump in May, envisions a missile defense system capable of intercepting threats before they reach their targets—a concept widely regarded as inspired by Israel’s “Iron Dome.”
However, the U.S. Department of Defense has yet to release specific details about the program.
Given the immense scale of the initiative, The Wall Street Journal notes that SpaceX’s $2 billion contract likely represents only one component of the broader “Golden Dome” project. Other defense technology firms, such as Anduril Industries and Palantir Technologies, are also expected to participate in its development. The Trump administration reportedly aims to complete deployment of the system before the end of President Trump’s current term.
Additionally, the report highlights that, beyond commissioning SpaceX to develop new defense satellites, the Pentagon plans to leverage SpaceX’s extensive Starlink satellite network for broader military applications, including secure communications, vehicle tracking, and other defense-related operations.
