According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, Elon Muskβs SpaceX is expected to secure a $2 billion contract from the U.S. government to develop satellites for President Donald Trumpβs proposed βGolden Domeβ initiative.
The report details that, under this agreement, SpaceX will be tasked with developing up to 600 satellites designed to track missiles and aircraft, forming the foundation of a high-tech aerial defense network.
The βGolden Domeβ project, announced by President Trump in May, envisions a missile defense system capable of intercepting threats before they reach their targetsβa concept widely regarded as inspired by Israelβs βIron Dome.β
However, the U.S. Department of Defense has yet to release specific details about the program.
Given the immense scale of the initiative, The Wall Street Journal notes that SpaceXβs $2 billion contract likely represents only one component of the broader βGolden Domeβ project. Other defense technology firms, such as Anduril Industries and Palantir Technologies, are also expected to participate in its development. The Trump administration reportedly aims to complete deployment of the system before the end of President Trumpβs current term.
Additionally, the report highlights that, beyond commissioning SpaceX to develop new defense satellites, the Pentagon plans to leverage SpaceXβs extensive Starlink satellite network for broader military applications, including secure communications, vehicle tracking, and other defense-related operations.
