At the beginning of this year, OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle, in collaboration with the White House, announced the establishment of the “Stargate” AI Data Center Project. The initiative has now secured additional funding from MGX, an artificial intelligence investment firm based in the United Arab Emirates. Over the next four years, a staggering $5 trillion will be allocated to constructing OpenAI’s next-generation AI infrastructure.
According to a Bloomberg report, the Abilene, Texas data center will house 64,000 NVIDIA GB200 GPU accelerators, scheduled for full deployment by late 2026. The installation process will be carried out in phases, with the first batch of 16,000 GPUs expected to be operational by summer 2025.
The Abilene facility is being co-designed by OpenAI and Oracle, with Oracle overseeing the management and operation of the supercomputing infrastructure upon deployment.
However, Oracle and NVIDIA have declined to comment on these reports.
Beyond Abilene, OpenAI and SoftBank are actively scouting for additional data center locations across the United States, including sites in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Oregon, and Salt Lake City, which are being considered as potential candidates.
Under the “Stargate” initiative, OpenAI will be responsible for operational management, while SoftBank will oversee financial aspects, with SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son serving as Chairman. The project brings together Oracle, Arm, Microsoft, NVIDIA, and OpenAI as key technology partners, aiming to integrate cutting-edge AI innovations, maximize computational performance, and establish a shared AI infrastructure for unparalleled processing power.
