OpenAI has announced the launch of a new App Directory within the ChatGPT platform, enabling users to directly connect ChatGPT with external services such as Spotify, Dropbox, and Apple Music. This integration allows people to “chat while getting things done,” marking a decisive step toward positioning ChatGPT as a true super app.
According to OpenAI’s official statement, the App Directory is organized into three main categories—Features, Lifestyle, and Productivity—and is currently available across iOS, Android, and the web version of ChatGPT.
Previously, using ChatGPT often required manually copying and pasting information. With the introduction of Apps—formerly known as Connectors—the AI can now directly read from or interact with external services. Users simply click Connect, grant permission, and can then invoke these services seamlessly within a conversation.
- Productivity gains: By linking Dropbox or Google Drive, ChatGPT can read reports stored in the cloud, generate concise summaries, or even transform outlines into full presentation decks.
- Lifestyle and entertainment: One of the highlights of this update is the new Apple Music integration, allowing users to ask the AI for music recommendations, create playlists, or organize their libraries using natural language.
- Real-world services: With DoorDash integration, ChatGPT can turn recipes or meal plans into shopping lists and even prepare an order automatically.
Beyond official partners, OpenAI has also opened the door to third-party developers. The company has released SDKs, UI libraries, and quick-start guides to encourage developers to build applications with a “native chat experience” and submit them for review and inclusion in the directory.
On the monetization front, the current model allows developers to route users from ChatGPT to their own websites or apps for purchases and subscriptions. OpenAI has also indicated that it is exploring an internal revenue-sharing mechanism, suggesting that ChatGPT could eventually evolve into an ecosystem with economic scale comparable to Apple’s App Store.
OpenAI emphasizes that all listed apps must provide clear privacy policies to safeguard user data. In my view, this App Directory differs fundamentally from the previously launched GPT Store. While the GPT Store focuses on sharing customized prompt-based bots, the App Directory represents genuine, API-level integrations with external services.
This shift reflects CEO Sam Altman’s long-standing vision: transforming AI from a tool that merely generates content into an agent that performs tasks. When ChatGPT can book flights via Booking.com, order dinner through DoorDash, and organize corporate documents in Dropbox, it ceases to be just a search alternative and becomes the central gateway to one’s digital life.
For developers, this signals a broader change ahead. Future apps may no longer require complex graphical interfaces; instead, a well-designed backend API paired with ChatGPT as the conversational front end could define the next wave of growth and opportunity.
