OpenAI recently announced the rollout of new ChatGPT personalization options for all users, designed to fine-tune the model’s word choice and tone during responses. For example, users can specify whether they want the model to use more or fewer emojis in its replies.
ChatGPT’s tone has long been a frequent point of criticism among users. Previously, OpenAI withdrew a personalization update after complaints that ChatGPT’s responses had become excessively flattering. Later, some users argued that the GPT-5 model felt overly cold and detached, prompting OpenAI to recalibrate the system once again to make it warmer and more approachable.
However, attitudes toward a conversational model naturally vary from user to user, just as individual preferences differ widely. Rather than relying solely on global adjustments by OpenAI, it makes more sense to provide configurable options that allow users to tailor the experience to their own needs. This rationale led to the latest update. The newly added ChatGPT personalization options include the following:
- Gentle and considerate: responses can be more friendly and personable, or more professional and strictly factual.
- Enthusiastic: replies may feel more energetic and vibrant, or more calm and neutral.
- Headers and lists: content can be presented in a clear, structured format with lists, or, if preferred, as fuller paragraph-based text instead of lists.
- Emoji: users can allow more frequent use of emojis in responses, or tightly control how often they appear.
These options are available under ChatGPT Settings → Personalization. The update has now been fully rolled out. Users can update to the latest version via the app store and review the settings, while web users can adjust them directly within the settings menu.
