The Mozilla Foundationβs open-source email client Thunderbird has released version 145.0, introducing full, native support for Microsoft Exchange email through the Exchange Web Services (EWS) protocol.
The Microsoft Exchange protocol is widely used in enterprise environments, including Microsoft 365 and Office 365. Previously, these users depended on third-party plugins; with native support now in place, they no longer need additional extensions and can enjoy seamless email synchronization and folder management across both local and server environments.
Migration from Outlook to Thunderbird has likewise become far more effortless, as the new version can automatically detect and configure accounts using Microsoftβs OAuth2 authentication protocol, eliminating the complicated steps previously required to log into Outlook mail.
In the official announcement, the development team stated: “Until now, Thunderbird users in Exchange hosted environments often relied on IMAP/POP protocols or third-party extensions. With full native Exchange support for email, Thunderbird now works more seamlessly in Exchange environments, including full folder listings, message synchronization, folder management both locally and on the server, attachment handling, and more. This simplifies life for users who depend on Exchange for email but prefer Thunderbird as their client.”
The Thunderbird team intends to introduce additional capabilities in future releases, including:
- Calendar synchronization
- Address book and contact integration
- Filtering operations requiring full message content
- Support for Microsoft 365 domains that need custom OAuth2 tenant IDs
- Local NTLM and OAuth2 authentication
- Integration with Microsoft Graph
The timeline for these features remains uncertain, as development complexity varies, but they are expected to roll out gradually to all users.
The Mozilla Foundation also noted that the Exchange Web Services protocol remains widely used, and Microsoft has committed to supporting it for the foreseeable futureβeven as it transitions Microsoft Graph into the primary interface for connecting with Microsoft 365.
