Microsoft continues to refine the Notepad application in the Windows 11 Insider Preview, expanding its integration with Microsoft Copilot AI. Previously, Notepad introduced AI-powered text rewriting capabilities, allowing users to expand, condense, or modify the tone of their text.
In the latest preview build, Notepad now includes a summarization feature, also powered by Microsoft Copilot AI. Users can select from various summary lengths, generating either concise overviews or more detailed summaries, depending on their needs.
This feature remains exclusive to Microsoft 365 subscribers and requires users to sign in with a Microsoft account. However, in certain regions, limited free usage appears to be available, though Microsoft has not disclosed details on reward point accrual or reset intervals.

The Snipping Tool has also received a notable upgrade. The latest preview introduces a “Draw & Hold” feature, allowing users to sketch lines and shapes with tools like a ballpoint pen, then pause and hold to automatically straighten them. Users can resize, move, or adjust shapes to suit their needs.
This enhancement makes it easier for users to mark up screenshots with freehand annotations and convert rough sketches into precise shapes. For instance, hand-drawn rectangles can be automatically refined into perfect squares.
Microsoft has also introduced a new “Protocol Launch” feature, aimed at developers integrating the Snipping Tool into their applications. This functionality enables developers to customize the Snipping Tool’s launch interface and define specific areas for capture, making it seamlessly adaptable for third-party applications.
