Microsoft recently rolled out the August 2025 routine security updates for all supported branches of Windows 10 and Windows 11. These updates address numerous known issues and security vulnerabilities, thoughβas is often the caseβthey have also introduced new problems affecting user experience.
Among them, users of Windows 11 version 24H2 have reported that writing approximately 50GB of data continuously to an SSD after installing the update may cause the SSD controller to lock up. Once this occurs, the drive becomes unusable until the system is restarted, and in some cases, even a reboot fails to restore normal functionality.
Although Microsoft has not yet issued an official statement confirming widespread SSD failures, the company has acknowledged that reset and recovery options are broken in both Windows 10 and Windows 11 after applying the update. Any attempt to use these features results in failure, leaving users unable to achieve their intended goals.
The scope of the reset/recovery issue is significant, affecting:
- Windows 11 version 23H2
- Windows 11 version 22H2
- Windows 10 version 22H2
- Windows 10 LTSC 2021
- Windows 10 LTSC 2019
- Windows 10 IoT LTSC 2019
Interestingly, Windows 11 version 24H2 appears unaffected by the reset and recovery failure, at least according to Microsoftβs bulletinβthough given the nature of these updates, it is unclear why this version seems to have escaped the issue.
Because of the widespread impact, Microsoft is currently preparing an Out-of-Band (OOB) update. Once finalized, the company will provide a direct download link for affected users to manually install the fix, which will later be integrated into the next scheduled security release on September 9, 2025.
As for the SSD lock-up problem in Windows 11 24H2, a resolution may take longer. If Microsoft confirms the issueβwhich, given its severity, seems likelyβthe company is expected to release a dedicated out-of-band update to address it.
