Reports have long suggested that Apple may introduce 7.5W wireless reverse charging in the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, a feature that would allow the devices to charge other Apple products such as AirPods and the Apple Watch.
Recently, a Weibo user echoed similar claims, though whether the feature will ultimately debut in the iPhone 17 Pro lineup remains to be seen at Apple’s September keynote event.
Apple had already implemented a form of reverse charging back in 2021, when it released the MagSafe Battery Pack for the iPhone 12 series. In that case, the iPhone itself could charge the accessory—but given its limited practicality, the feature was largely overlooked.
Enabling the iPhone to charge AirPods and the Apple Watch, however, would be far from trivial. Both devices have relatively small batteries, making them ideal candidates for emergency top-ups via iPhone. This could be particularly valuable for AirPods, where users often forget to recharge the case before heading out, only to find their earbuds dead. In such situations, drawing a small amount of power from an iPhone could keep them usable without needing a full recharge.
In the Android ecosystem, many flagship models already support reverse charging, whether wired or wireless. Although the feature is rarely used in everyday life, it has proven useful in occasional emergency scenarios—a role Apple may now be preparing to embrace.
