The long-running blogging platform Typepad, online for 21 years, has announced that it will cease operations on September 30, 2025. All users who publish blogs on the platform must export their content in advance, as data will become irretrievable once the service is discontinued.
Launched in 2003, Typepad provided users with a hosted blogging system that required no server ownership or domain registration, while also supporting customization and advertising placement.
In its announcement, the company did not disclose the exact reason for the shutdown. However, given the declining appeal of blogging platforms and the trend of professional users hosting their own sites under custom domains, the closure of a paid service like Typepad comes as little surprise.
- Users must export all of their data before September 30, 2025. After this date, accounts, blogs, and related content will no longer be accessible, and user accounts will be permanently disabled.
- Starting August 31, 2025, Typepad will stop charging service fees. For users who have recently made payments, the company will attempt to issue prorated refunds using their saved payment method.
How to export your data:
- Log into your account and navigate to the blog dashboard.
- Click Settings β Import/Export.
- From there, generate an export file in Movable Type format.
- Allow time for the backup file to be created. Once available, right-click the link and select Save Link As or Download Linked File As. If the download fails midway, the file will be incompleteβonly a full, successful download ensures a usable backup.
