Amazon Expands Kindle Colorsoft Lineup with More Affordable 16GB Model & First Kids’ Edition

Following the debut of its first color-display e-reader, the Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition, Amazon has now unveiled a more affordable 16GB variant, alongside the Kindle Colorsoft Kids—an edition tailored specifically for children—signaling an ambitious expansion into the colored e-book reader market.
The newly introduced Kindle Colorsoft 16GB is priced at $250, $30 less than last year’s Signature Edition. While its storage capacity is halved from 32GB to 16GB, it remains more than adequate for readers primarily engaging with text-based e-books. Given that most digital books occupy only a few megabytes, even occasional perusal of color comics or graphic novels is well-supported for everyday use.
Despite the price reduction, the Kindle Colorsoft retains its 7-inch color E Ink display, offering vivid visuals and a battery life of up to eight weeks. It also features adjustable warm lighting and pinch-to-zoom capability. Additionally, Amazon has addressed prior concerns about yellow-tinted screen edges seen in earlier models, ensuring a more consistent and refined reading experience.
However, in comparison to the higher-end Signature Edition, the Kindle Colorsoft 16GB omits certain premium features such as auto-adjusting front lighting and wireless charging.
Targeting the younger demographic, Amazon has simultaneously released the Kindle Colorsoft Kids, priced at $270. This edition includes a one-year subscription to Amazon Kids+ and a two-year worry-free guarantee that covers device replacements due to accidental damage. The device comes preloaded with educational tools such as Vocabulary Builder and Word Wise to support vocabulary development. It also accommodates the OpenDyslexic font and connects to Bluetooth headphones, facilitating audio learning through audiobooks.
To enhance its appeal, the children’s edition includes two illustrated titles—Fantastic River and Starlight Reading—and offers integration with the Amazon Parent Dashboard, allowing guardians to oversee and manage their child’s reading activity for added peace of mind.
Both the Kindle Colorsoft 16GB and Kindle Colorsoft Kids are now available for purchase, each bundled with a complimentary three-month subscription to Kindle Unlimited, granting access to a vast library of books and content for an enriched reading journey.
