Following a court ruling that found Apple had willfully violated antitrust regulations—and the subsequent approval of Epic Games’ motion to enforce an injunction—Apple has now amended its App Store guidelines within the United States, lifting previous restrictions on in-app button designs and external link usage.
Under the revised U.S. App Store guidelines, developers are no longer barred from directing users to external promotional campaigns or third-party payment methods via buttons or hyperlinks. This change grants users greater flexibility in how they make purchases, while also enabling content providers to more effectively advertise promotional offers.
The update comes in response to a recent decision by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, which determined that Apple had deliberately violated the injunction issued in 2021. The court granted Epic Games’ motion to enforce compliance, thereby compelling Apple to permit alternative payment methods for in-app digital goods within the U.S., and to allow broader promotional messaging—free from Apple’s previously imposed limitations.
Following the court’s mandate, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney confirmed that Fortnite would return to the U.S. App Store. Spotify also released an updated version of its app that enables users to subscribe using third-party payment methods via external links.
In its official response, Apple stated that it would comply with the court’s ruling, though it also signaled its intent to seek a renewed appeal.
