Multiple reports now suggest that Apple is developing an upgraded version of the Apple TV 4K, with the new model expected to debut later this year. Code references indicate that the upcoming Apple TV may be powered by the A17 Pro chip.
The current Apple TV 4K is equipped with Apple’s A15 Bionic processor, launched in September 2021, clocked at up to 3.3 GHz, and also used in the iPad Mini 6. By contrast, the A17 Pro—introduced in September 2024—is built on TSMC’s N3E process, with a peak frequency of 3.78 GHz. More notably, it supports Apple’s AI services and can run console-class games with advanced graphical effects.
From a purely performance standpoint, the A17 Pro might be considered overkill for an Apple TV. However, its inclusion could signal Apple’s intent to bring AI capabilities to the device, offering a substantial performance leap over the A15.
Initially designed for the iPhone 15 Pro series, the A17 Pro is also found in the iPad Mini 7. Its power is more than sufficient to handle Apple TV’s requirements, even enabling smooth gameplay for graphically demanding titles.
The exact release date for the new Apple TV 4K remains uncertain. Rumors point to a possible unveiling during Apple’s September event, though it could be delayed until late 2025.
In addition, reports suggest the new model will feature Apple’s in-house Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chips. These components have historically been supplied by Broadcom, making this a potential test run for Apple’s custom wireless technology. If performance meets expectations, future iPhones may also adopt these in-house Wi-Fi and Bluetooth solutions.
