In the latest edition of his “Power On” column, Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman once again touched upon Apple’s long-rumored smart ring device, which may represent the company’s next step in expanding its wearable technology portfolio.
Gurman noted that, given the relatively incremental updates to the Apple Watch in recent years, and with competitors like Samsung already launching several smart ring products offering a more compact and unobtrusive means of tracking users’ health metrics, Apple’s speculated “Apple Ring” could very well be the company’s next strategic move in the wearable space.
The ring-shaped form factor is particularly well-suited for prolonged wear, making it ideal for monitoring physiological data during sleep or exercise. Moreover, the absence of a display screen significantly extends battery life, potentially appealing to users who prefer minimal charging interruptions and a distraction-free experience.
The concept of the “Apple Ring” is far from idle speculation. As early as 2007, a designer on the Yanko Design platform introduced the “iRing” concept, complete with Apple’s iconic glowing blue logo. That early vision already included touch controls, media playback features, and a ring-shaped charging dock, foreshadowing the potential applications of such a device.
Additionally, Apple’s patent filings over the years have revealed its exploration of various innovative functionalities for a smart ring, such as detecting knuckle gestures, providing haptic feedback, integrating with the Vision Pro system, and even designs that could morph into bracelets or necklaces—clearly indicating that the company has long entertained serious intentions for this form factor.
Even before Apple unveils its own device, the market has seen a growing number of smart ring entries, with brands like Oura gaining traction and Samsung having launched its Galaxy Ring last year. Samsung reportedly plans additional iterations, while Acer has also recently announced its own smart ring product—suggesting a broader industry consensus on the appeal of less obtrusive wearable technology.
Although Apple appears to be well-positioned with relevant patents and R&D capabilities, the company has yet to signal a concrete launch timeline—possibly out of concern that a smart ring could cannibalize Apple Watch sales. However, given the stagnation in significant innovation across recent Apple Watch generations, Apple may see the “Apple Ring” as a means to reignite consumer interest.
Apple has not confirmed or hinted at the release of the “Apple Ring,” but market observers speculate that the earliest announcement could come in 2026. The device may be positioned to complement the Apple Watch rather than replace it, and many analysts believe the “Apple Ring” could unlock fresh waves of demand in the wearable tech market.
