As long rumored, Apple has finally unveiled the iPhone Air at its autumn keynote, hailing it as the thinnest and lightest iPhone ever created.
Unlike speculation that it would carry the “17” designation, Apple opted to brand the device simply as Air, signaling either the beginning of a new standalone product line or an emphasis on its distinct identity within the iPhone family.
Measuring a mere 5.6mm in thickness, the iPhone Air features a 6.5-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with ProMotion technology supporting refresh rates up to 120Hz, and peak outdoor brightness of 3,000 nits. The chassis is crafted from 80% recycled polished titanium, delivering triple the scratch resistance and quadruple the impact durability, making it the most rugged iPhone to date. It will be available in black, gray, gold, and blue finishes.
Powering the device is the A19 Pro chip, rather than the standard variant previously rumored, along with Apple’s first in-house N1 chip dedicated to handling Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Thread connectivity. The iPhone Air also debuts the C1X networking chip, offering twice the connection performance of the C1 used in the iPhone 16e, while consuming even less power—earning it the distinction of being the most energy-efficient iPhone ever.
To maximize internal space for the battery, the camera system has been streamlined to a single-lens design. Still, the 48MP sensor supports 12MP 2x telephoto functionality, covering 26mm, 28mm, 35mm, and 52mm focal lengths, and is capable of capturing 4K60p Dolby Vision video. The body also retains the dedicated camera control button.
The front-facing camera mirrors that of the iPhone 17, featuring an 18MP Center Stage sensor, but with the added advantage of the A19 Pro’s processing power, enabling simultaneous recording with both front and rear cameras—a feature particularly appealing to streamers who wish to capture themselves and their surroundings at once.
Due to its ultra-slim form factor, the iPhone Air will be sold exclusively as an eSIM model worldwide. Complementing its release, Apple introduced a new thinner MagSafe battery pack, though the device itself boasts an impressive 40 hours of continuous video playback.
Apple has also designed new transparent protective cases and edge bumpers, along with an official iPhone strap accessory, catering to the growing trend of carrying smartphones hands-free.
The iPhone Air is available for preorder starting today, with official sales beginning on September 19. Pricing starts at $999, with storage options beginning at 256GB and reaching up to 1TB.
