Apple has spent recent years aggressively championing a paperless, digitized way of life, and one strand of that push – integrating physical driver’s licenses and state-issued identification cards into Apple Wallet – continues to expand steadily across the United States. According to recent reporting, Apple Wallet’s digital ID coverage is set to grow by four more states, with North Carolina now officially confirmed to launch its program in the near future.
North Carolina Confirms Full Support for Three Major Mobile Wallets Next Year
North Carolina’s Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) recently confirmed plans to roll out the state’s Mobile ID program this coming December.
Initially, this digital identification feature will be available exclusively through the state’s dedicated “NC Wallet” application. However, the North Carolina DMV indicated that by early next year, this digital credential service will expand to support the three dominant mobile payment and card platforms: Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, and Samsung Wallet.
Once that expansion takes effect, North Carolina residents holding a valid driver’s license or state ID will be able to digitize their credentials free of charge and bind them directly to their smartphones.
Accepted at Over 250 Airport Checkpoints – But Physical IDs Still Matter
On the practical side, the North Carolina DMV noted that TSA security checkpoints at more than 250 airports nationwide already accept Mobile ID, including major hubs such as Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Raleigh-Durham International Airport.
Additionally, law enforcement officers will treat this type of digital identification as valid during routine stops. That said, if an officer isn’t equipped with a compatible digital ID reader at the time, drivers may still be asked to verbally provide their license information instead.
To avoid unnecessary complications, officials continue to recommend that residents carry their physical ID as a backup during this transitional period – particularly since general retailers, restaurants, and other businesses are still gradually adapting to this new digital verification system.
Leaked Code Reveals Oklahoma, Utah, and Virginia Are Next
Beyond North Carolina, MacRumors also uncovered clues within recent app code hinting that Oklahoma, Utah, and Virginia will soon join Apple Wallet’s digital ID lineup. While no firm launch timeline has been confirmed for these states, the discovery represents a meaningful step forward in Apple’s push to broaden digital ID adoption.
As things currently stand, Apple Wallet already offers digital ID services across 15 U.S. states and territories, including early adopter Arizona, alongside Maryland, Colorado, California, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico.
Infrastructure Readiness Will Determine the Last Mile Toward a Walletless Future
Ever since Apple first unveiled its vision of integrating driver’s licenses and state IDs into Apple Wallet, the pace of its rollout has drawn criticism for being sluggish. Compared to the rapid global adoption of Apple Pay credit card integration, digital identification involves navigating deeply sensitive state government regulations, cross-departmental system integration, and considerably stricter privacy and security review processes – transforming each new state’s onboarding into a prolonged negotiation.
Yet the real challenge isn’t fundamentally about putting an ID inside a smartphone – it’s about whether the physical world is actually prepared to read these digital credentials.
As North Carolina officials themselves have cautioned, even as airport security checkpoints steadily adopt support, everyday life tells a different story: from the card-reading equipment law enforcement carries during traffic stops, to the age-verification systems used at convenience stores and bars when purchasing alcohol, the pace at which hardware and procedures are being updated still lags considerably behind the software side. Until this verification infrastructure achieves genuine widespread adoption, users won’t truly be able to leave that bulky physical wallet safely at home.
