Perplexity AI, the AI-powered search engine, recently announced a multi-year licensing partnership with the world-renowned image provider Getty Images. Through this collaboration, Perplexity will gain API access to Getty Images’ extensive visual archives—including its full collections of stock and editorial photography—and plans to integrate this vast image library into its AI search and discovery tools.
At the heart of this partnership lies an effort to address one of the most complex issues in the AI industry: copyright and attribution.
According to Getty Images’ official statement, Perplexity has pledged to improve the way images are displayed, ensuring that each visual includes proper source attribution and clickable image credits, while also helping to educate users on the ethical and lawful use of licensed imagery.
The deal is widely viewed as a strategic response by Perplexity to its growing number of legal challenges surrounding content usage and data sourcing. As generative AI tools proliferate, the company has faced several lawsuits related to the way it collects and presents information, including:
- Japanese media lawsuit: In August, two major Japanese media groups—Nikkei and Asahi Shimbun—filed a suit accusing Perplexity of illegally reproducing and storing their articles on its servers and providing inaccurate source citations.
- Reddit lawsuit: In October, Reddit sued Perplexity alongside three other AI companies, alleging unauthorized data scraping from its platform.
- Dictionary publishers lawsuit: In September, Merriam-Webster and its parent company, Encyclopaedia Britannica, also filed an infringement lawsuit against Perplexity.
Interestingly, Getty Images’ stance on AI has evolved considerably. In 2022, the company banned AI-generated artworks from being sold on its platform due to copyright concerns and subsequently sued Stable Diffusion, alleging the unauthorized reproduction of millions of copyrighted images.
Now, by choosing to partner with Perplexity AI, Getty Images appears to be shifting from legal confrontation to strategic collaboration, integrating AI platforms into its broader commercial ecosystem through structured licensing agreements.
