The Mozilla Foundation is currently piloting an AI-powered search engine within the Firefox browser, selecting Perplexity AI as its partner. Entirely driven by artificial intelligence, Perplexity AI has already garnered a significant user base, with many opting to replace Google Search in their daily routines.
Although Perplexity AI is not yet the default search engine in Firefox, users may encounter an option to use it when typing queries into the address bar. Clicking this suggestion triggers Perplexity AI to generate responses to the entered query.
The test is currently limited to select regions, so many users may not yet see Perplexity AI as an available option. While the Mozilla Foundation has not issued an official blog post regarding the initiative, the Mozilla Connect community has confirmed that the trial is underway.
The Foundation describes Perplexity AI as a search engine designed to deliver direct, conversational responsesβsimilar in concept to Googleβs AI Overviews, which now provide AI-generated summaries at the top of search results.
However, Firefox is unlikely to designate Perplexity AI as its default engine in the near term. The financial partnership with Googleβwherein Firefox earns a share of revenue by using Google Search as the defaultβremains a critical source of income. It remains unclear whether Perplexity AI has offered Mozilla any financial incentives to promote its integration.
